SpiceBird A New Mozilla Product

By Paul | Dec 30, 2007

Collaboration is much beyond e-mail communication – it’s a process where individuals work together to achieve a common goal. Apart from having e-mail, instant messaging and group calendaring, an ideal collaboration system should make ‘working together’ possible – like creating a proposal, launching a new product, developing software, managing group knowledge and publishing websites even while working from different continents. Spicebird – the collaboration suite developed by us, creates a platform to do precisely that. In addition, Spicebird makes customization easy and ensures that the software can be adapted to your business collaboration needs.

If you are here looking for the roadmap of Spicebird or to download it, please take a look at this blog post. Check out a preview of Spicebird 0.3 alpha:
Spicebird Demo
It’s supposed to be a way to Integrate Email, Instant Messaging, Calendar, and Blogging into one little program. I am quite curious about this little product and trying to get into the beta to see if it is all that. It also has RSS feed reader, and Message tagging. So I thought people would like to see this for themselves.

Microsoft Using YouTube To Promote Vista & Live, Leaves Comments Open

By Paul | Dec 30, 2007

Microsoft has taken its marketing push for Windows Vista and Windows Live into enemy territory by offering demonstration videos on YouTube (example above). The new channel (link) was launched December 21.

The content itself isn’t all that exciting, but they do demonstrate various positive aspects of Vista and Live that viewers may not be aware of. The more interesting aspect is that Microsoft would use the Google owned YouTube for such as promotion; it certainly demonstrates just how powerful the market position of YouTube has become over the last 2 years that Microsoft would use it to promote their products.

[Via TechCrunch]

As you can see Microsoft is trying a new avenue of promoting Vista. I am also going to start Blogging again after being off for a week and Will start blogging from time to time, until some juicy stuff comes my way!! ;) Sorry had to take a week off for my Sanctity!!

It is the time of Season!!

By Paul | Dec 24, 2007

As most of you know the internet has made it easy to order stuff for Christmas for the kids, well here’s my little story of an order that went wrong!!

Dec 24,
My wife was supposed to get a package from UPS.

  • At 2:06PM it was delivered. To someone we do not know.

My wife calls UPS and they cant’ get a hold of the driver until the next business day.

  • The next business day is The day after Christmas!! :(

I’m guessing the driver is still new to this or had to many packages to deliver and it went to a house it shouldn’t!! My question, Should I call each of the houses around here with the last name on the deliver slip or should I wait?

These are the questions of the day. After all I’ve went through this week with Sore Throat and Fever you can imagine how this just makes the cake more sour!! :( I guess it will be Up to the UPS people to find out what went wrong. Hopefully we either get it back or we get our money back!!

Sync Office Documents to Google Docs with DocSyncer

    By Paul | Dec 19, 2007

    docsyncer_top.jpg

Windows only: Free web site/software combo DocSyncer has just rolled out its public beta, pitching a set-it-and-forget-it way of syncing your computer’s documents with Google Docs. After signing up and installing the software, DocSyncer goes to work uploading all the Microsoft Office and OpenOffice documents it finds in your Documents and Desktop folders. You can then choose which file types will be synced to Google Docs and set DocSyncer to open those files with local software instead of Google Docs, but you’ll likely want to make a few more tweaks before leaving it running.

Thought this was something cool to use when you have documents you want to keep handy. If anyone uses this let me know!!

Keep Windows Up to Date Quickly with Appupdater

    By Paul | Dec 19, 2007

    appupdater_cropped.jpg

Windows only: Install and remove programs, update all your applications at once and build your own Linux-style repository for Windows with AppUpdater, an unassuming but powerful free program for Windows. Similar to the Apt or Yum applications in Linux, AppUpdater saves you browsing time and guess work while installing from a big list of programs, including a number of Lifehacker favorites—but you can roll your own repository of programs as well. But Appupdater is more than just a low-tech installer—its real power lies in two simple commands.

Once you’ve got a good set of programs installed, you simply run (or schedule an automatic process to run) two lines from the Windows command prompt to make sure you’ve got the latest of everything:

Intel to delay 45nm quads – report

    By Paul | Dec 19, 2007

ACCORDING TO A REPORT, Intel has decided to postpone the launch of its 45nm quad-core CPUs because AMD is in such a mess.

Digitimes said it learned from motherboard makers that the chippery was scheduled to launch in January next year. But now the mobo mob have coughed that the launch will be put back a month or two.

    [Via Inquirer]

I thought Intel was supposed to be paranoid? Is this a new business strategy to get a better processor ready before they send it out?

UStream.TV Gets Some Cash And General Wesley Clark

    By Paul | Dec 19, 2007

What does General Wesley Clark know about live Web video? Apparently enough to land him a seat on Ustream.TV’s board of advisors. Or maybe they just liked his shiny medals. The company also announced a funding round today from Band of Angels and Western Technology Investors, which specializes in debt financing for startups. The amount was not disclosed.

Ustream.TV is a site for live Web video broadcasting that launched last March. It claims 115,000 people have used the service, “broadcasting one million unique viewer hours per month,” whatever that means. (How do you broadcast a “unique viewer hour”?) Anyway, that comes to about 5,000 hours of video a day, attracting a few hundred thousand viewers. Most of the broadcasters are regular consumers, but the site has also been used by presidential candidates, and the Plain White Ts rock band to broadcast a live concert that was watched by 150,000 fans online.

This sounds like Ustream.tv is getting even more better. I hope to see more stuff from them now!! Wonder what they have planned for it now!!

XP Service Pack 3 release candidate ready to download

    By Paul | Dec 19, 2007

While Microsoft is quick to downplay XP when comparing it to Vista, the legacy OS continues to shackle the hearts (and systems) of many. Fortunately, Microsoft just opened up their XP service pack 3 release candidate for general download — that means you. SP3 RC was previously only available by invitation. Now get going, you’ll need time to download all 336MBs of the last major update to the six-year old OS.

P.S. This is a “release candidate.” The final SP3 release isn’t expected until the first half of 2008.
    [Via Engadget]

Just thought people would like to know to go check out the first RC for SP3 for XP!! Enjoy!

Reality check: what we know (and don’t) about Windows 7

    By Paul | Dec 19, 2007

Separating the wheat from the chaff
Would you buy a new operating system from this man?

One thing we all know about Windows 7 is the management team that will be leading the project. Jim Allchin—the veteran who led the Windows XP and Vista teams—is gone, and in his place is Steven Sinofsky, who previously headed up the Office 2007 project. This has raised all sorts of speculation that the Windows user interface will be getting a similar sort of “face lift” as the venerable Office suite did in its last release. Some have even gone so far as to say it would be “Ribbon-based.”

Windows 7 will get a facelift, but the extent of the UI changes are not yet known at Microsoft: current Windows 7 builds, which we have seen in person, use the Vista interface. Final designs for the UI have not yet been decided, and likely will not be for several months. If someone shows you any leaked screenshots of Windows 7, you can tell them that they have almost certainly been duped by enthusiastic fakers with a copy of Photoshop. Humans are visual creatures, and for most people the user interface is the only way to know that something has changed with a new release of the operating system. Unfortunately, the UI is typically the last thing to be finalized. Those of you who have watched the development of previous versions of Windows know what even once you start seeing concept UIs, nothing is set in stone.

    Microsoft security update cripples IE

    By Paul | Dec 18, 2007

Users started posting messages to multiple Microsoft support newsgroups almost immediately after Microsoft released the MS07-069 security bulletin on Dec. 11, saying that they were unable to connect to the Internet, either because IE refused to open or because when it did open, it could not reach various sites.

“About 60% of the time, I would get an ‘Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and must close’ dialog,” reported Bill Drake on the Windows Update newsgroup. Others echoed those comments on IE-specific forums, noting that both IE6 and IE7 balked at loading, or while loading, some pages, particularly home pages, on both Windows XP and Windows Vista machines.

ther users on the support forums weren’t much help, except to suggest uninstalling last Tuesday’s security update. That’s what Decker did. “We uninstalled [MS07-069] and have had no problems since then,” he said.

    [Via ComputerWorld]

With Vista, I do think the reason I’ve not had any problems is I don’t use IE. LOL I use Firefox but another reason is that I’ve also installed the SP1 RC1 on my system. That also might fix the problem could someone check it out and let me know!!

    Top 10 Games of 2007

    By Paul | Dec 18, 2007

2007 will be remembered as the year next-generation gaming came into its own. A veritable avalanche of quality software kept the Xbox 360 in stiff competition with Nintendo’s upstart Wii, which is still in great part riding on the mammoth mindshare of Wii Sports.

Last year, our top 10 list was dominated by the swan songs of PlayStation 2. This year, next-gen platforms finally started to get games of similar polish and quality.

Wired’s panel of gaming experts — Susan Arendt, Chris Baker, Lore Sjöberg and me — has engaged in a vicious e-mail fight to bring you our countdown of our top 10 favorite games of 2007. Here are our picks.

    Some of the picks are:

    • Crackdown
    • Crysis
    • COD 4
    • Mass Effect
    • Orange Box
    • BioShock
    • Super Mario Galaxy
    • Rock Band

    [Via Wired]

Ok, Some of the games there I’d loved to play like Crysis and COD4 and even BioShock others are questionable. Anyways I thought people would like ideas to get there kids if your still trying to figure out what to get them for Christmas!

Faster Shutdowns Using the Run Dialog

    By Paul | Dec 17, 2007

Run.pngReader Eric writes in with a tip to eliminate hangs and speed up the shutdown process in Windows without installing any extra software.

Whenever I tried to shutdown my work laptop it would take almost five minutes. Five minutes! Since I work in a completely locked-down environment I couldn’t look to any third party applications for help. Entering the following shutdown command in the run dialog speeds up my shutdown time dramatically.
    shutdown -f -t 0

The command Eric uses immediately forces any open applications to close without warning prior to Windows shutting down. Here’s another way to quickly shutdown your Windows computer. Thanks, Eric!
    [Via Lifehacker]

I’ll have to try this little tip out on my system. Vista takes forever to shut down. Maybe I can make a shutdown icon for it!!

Vista named #1 biggest tech disappointment of 2007 — by PC World

    By Paul | Dec 17, 2007

First PC World gets all up on the soapbox that (until a certain date) the MacBook Pro is the fastest PC the mag had tested, but consider the next step taken: PC World has boldly declared Vista #1 with a bullet in in their Biggest Tech Disappointments of 2007. Ok, sure, we get that it’s “disappointments” and not “crappy products” — the two imply very different things, and it’s hard not to be somewhat disappointed by any product that took the better part of a decade to come out — but if PC World harshing on Vista this bad doesn’t smack at all of linkbait, well, we don’t know what does. Oh, and here’s that link.

I’ve had a lot of troubles with Vista but seriously who doesn’t have trouble with a OS!! Come on, They must only want a Macintosh!

Google is Profiling you, Watch yourself!!

    By Paul | Dec 16, 2007

They’re coming and it will be difficult to get away without having one. Google Profiles will be integrated in most Google services so you have a coherent identity and a simple way to manage your contacts.

“A Google Profile is simply how you represent yourself on Google products — it lets you tell others a bit more about who you are and what you’re all about. You control what goes into your Google Profile, sharing as much (or as little) as you’d like.”\
    [Via Google Blog]

As you can see, Google is trying to make this work with the open social network. So people can see your profiles more clearly. This however worries me. We do not know who sees it and we do not know what they do with this information. It’s something you have to be careful about, because of the possibility of getting your Identity stolen. I wouldn’t put to much in your profile or at least I hope google allows you to opt in or opt out this little idea of theres. What do you think, should we be able to OPT IN or should it be an OPT out?

    T-Mobile turns off Twitter

    By Paul | Dec 15, 2007

    twitter.png

Reports alleging T-Mobile has shut off Twitter for their customers are rolling in. Complaints have surfaced on T-Mobile’s user forum on Satisfaction as well as several other personal blogs and forums. A T-Mobile representative replied to a customer’s service request with this email:

…Twitter is not an authorized third-party service provider, and therefore you are not able to utilize service from this provide any longer…. T-Mobile is not in violation of any agreement by not providing service to Twitter. T-Mobile regrets any inconvenience, however please note that if you remain under contract and choose to cancel service, you will be responsible for the $200 early termination fee that would be assessed to the account at cancellation.
    [Via TechCrunch]

Is this what you call shooting yourself in the foot. Once people find out they will either complain enough for t-mobile to turn it back on or people will just leave in swarms. What else will they turn off pounce??

Speed Up Your Startup Time with BootVis

    By Paul | Dec 15, 2007

    bootvis.png

Windows only: Freeware application BootVis analyzes your Windows startup, tracking the programs that automatically run and the drivers Windows loads, to show you what processes are slowing down your startup. To use it, just run the app and select one of the options from the Trace menu. BootVis will restart you computer, track your startup, and analyze the results. You can even ask BootVis to optimize your boot time, but I’d suggest hunting down your worst-offending startup apps and disabling them with msconfig if you don’t absolutely need them. Originally a Microsoft software, this abandoned freeware, Windows XP only tool is the perfect tool for troubleshooting a slow-to-boot system.

Gmail Adds New Shortcuts, Easy Undo

    By Paul | Dec 15, 2007

new-shortcuts.pngAs Gmail continues its slow (but sure?) trek towards integrating the keyboard shortcut goodness that is the Gmail Macros script in our very own Better Gmail Firefox extension, they’ve been throwing in lots of handy new shortcuts along the way. We already highlighted Gmail’s best new shortcut, but as it turns out they snuck a couple other shortcuts in under the radar: The undo action (when available) with a keypress of ‘z’ (Ctrl-z anyone) and access to the More Actions drop-down menu with the ‘.’ key. The undo shortcut is particularly useful, since virtually the only time I needed to leave my keyboard in Gmail was to undo a archiving a message. On the other hand, the More Actions shortcut seems like a crippled version of the ‘l’ shortcut in Gmail Macros. Remember you can get a look at all of the default shortcuts at any time in Gmail by typing a question mark (?), or head to the keyboard shortcuts page linked below.

    [Via Lifehacker]

Another great tip for the Gmail user in your life. Let them know they can now undo deletes and other stuff like that!!

Now that CompUSA is closing its doors, it has begun the process of tying up loose ends regarding issues like gift cards, rain checks, rebates and returns. In a nutshell, if you purchased anything from the store after December 12th you are pretty much S.O.L.

All outstanding warranties will be a third-party provider, Assurant Solutions. Wow, going out of business during the holidays makes things easy on everyone doesn’t it? The company said that the program’s ability to mimic human behavior to dupe chatters is worrisome, and could readily be used to collect all manner of information. “As a tool that can be used by hackers to conduct identity fraud, CyberLover demonstrates an unprecedented level of social engineering,” said PC Tools senior malware analyst Sergei Shevchenko in a statement. “CyberLover has been designed as a bot [robot] that lures victims automatically, without human intervention. If it’s spawned in multiple instances on multiple servers, the number of potential victims could be very substantial.”

This is really a security issue here. Never give out your personal information online. I just want to post this to remind people not everything online is safe.

    SPAMfighter 6.2.4

    By Paul | Dec 13, 2007

If you are looking for an Outlook or Outlook Express tool to remove spam and phishing emails from your inbox, look no further. SPAMfighter is the tool you are looking for. Simple, reliable and efficient.

A lot of anti-spam products rely on filters and other rule-based technologies, but spammers work every day to get around these filters. What works one day, doesn’t work the next. SPAMfighter uses a very different strategy. SPAMfighter harnesses the power of a very large community of people who instantly report any spam or phishing messages they receive. Once several people have reported the same email, it is automatically filtered for the rest of the community. In this way, very few people in the community will ever see the spam or phishing email.

This helps you get more out of your email then you used to. You can have it block spam or delete spam. I am trying to help people fight spam! Enjoy

Kindle DRM hacked to allow protected Mobipocket ebooks

    By Paul | Dec 13, 2007

We knew the Kindle’s DRM would be cracked the minute we heard about it, and it looks like the first chink in the armor is here courtesy of Igor Skochinsky: he’s discovered the algorithm the Kindle uses to turn regular Mobipocket books into Amazon’s proprietary .azw format. The hack involves replacing a Mobipocket file’s PID with one generated from your Kindle’s serial number, and then setting a Kindle-specific flag that allows it to be opened. Igor’s posted a couple little Python scripts to handle both of these tasks for you, and it looks like sites like Fictionwise already support the hack. That’s all well and good, but we’re still waiting patiently for the day when we can tether to that free EV-DO.

Listen to Music and Playlists from Gmail with Gspace

    By Paul | Dec 13, 2007

Firefox only (Windows/Mac/Linux): Store and manage music with all those extra gigabytes in your Gmail account with previously mentioned Gmail File Space extension, now known simply as Gspace. Just install the extension, upload some music, and then enter Player mode. From there you can create playlists from the music you’ve uploaded and play them in the embedded flash player. It’s a bit of a hassle setting Flash to play files from Gmail (you have to change your Global Flash settings), but if you jump through the hoops it’s pretty cool to be able to store music and build playlists from your Gmail account.
