How to Get advertisers to come to you!!

By Paul | Jul 31, 2008

Lately in the past few weeks, I’ve had several Advertisers come to me wanting to advertise for there clients.  I’d thought I share you some of my experiences, in the hopes, that you too can get advertisers to come to you so I’d come up with some steps to better help you;

  1. Don’t use Blogger.com — Yep that’s right, after recently moving from blogger to WordPress.  I’ve found that after the move, I’d start getting more people coming to my site.  I don’t know if it was something I did or if it was the platform that got me more business.  I think most advertisers think blogger is for amatuers or people who aren’t interested in revenues.
  2. Content is the Key — Having spent the last few months thinking how I can get people to come to my blog.  I’ve found this out.  If you make content that is specific to your area and not try to repeat what everyone else is saying you can get a high volume of people to come to you site.  I’ve also learned that Google is your friend and you need to use it to you fullest abilities.

Five Ways to Increase Email Productivity!

By Paul | Jul 29, 2008

As time goes by there are always going to be problems with having Email and being productive.  You can have so much stuff going on in one day it’s not even possible to really have time to thoroughly check your email.  So here are some great steps to get some of your emails done with!!

  1. Empty your InBox – If you don’t have control over your inbox maybe it is time to make sure it’s empty or at least all read!!  It’s true most of the time I don’t read all my emails, I pick and choose what I want to read.  After that, I decide to make all post marked at read!!  I call it the Panic button!!
  2. Organize your Inbox – Having been signed up for several different email groups.  I’ve got it all organized.  I’ve got a folder setup and used for each group.  I then create a mail filter for each group and have it put it there, unless it’s spam then I have it go into the spam folder!! (also see Email Filtering)

Understanding Hulu!

By Paul | Jul 29, 2008

So I’ve had so many people tell me.  I’m wrong on some of these ones I say are coming out.  Just like last week the tiny URL was going to Dick Van Dyke Season 3 and they  replace it with the Facts of Life.  They used the Tiny URL system to give us hints.  Anyways, back to the topic at hand. <See July 14-19 Post>

This is all speculation and theories,  Read end of post for more details!!

Why does Hulu promise one thing and do another?

It’s really not Hulu’s Fault, They have a lot of things going on at one time.  You see when they give use a week of clues, they have made Tentative Agreements, sometimes it’s a written agreement with a clause.  They have a clause? Well let’s put this in terms you can understand.  If there is any reason from either the publisher, or Hulu, they can’t or won’t publish the movie or show.

What does this mean and how does this affect the clues?

Understanding a Bloggers Heart

By Paul | Jul 28, 2008

I’ve had so many people talk about why blog? I’ve seen articles about blogging being dead. I say that’s not going to happen, it is the heart of a blogger to talk about what they want to talk about. It comes from the idea that they have the understanding of the what a blogger is!

What’s a blogger?

It’s in the wikapedia as this : “A blog (a contraction of the term web log) is a website, usually maintained by an individual, with regular entries of commentary, descriptions of events, or other material such as graphics or video. Entries are commonly displayed in reverse chronological order. “Blog” can also be used as a verb, meaning to maintain or add content to a blog.”  So what does that say about me? Well let us talk about this in terms we can understand. Having been blogging for the last few months or I should say year(s). I’ve got some things to say about this. Not all bloggers are bad and not all bloggers are professional. I hate to say this but it is the truth some bloggers have never went to school for writing class or other such education. We saw this as a way to talk about what we are passionate about and want to educate others. It comes from a desire to socialize with people who have the same interest and to be part of a greater plan.

Apple Installs software without your Knowledge!

By Paul | Jul 25, 2008

Mobile Me installed in the Control panel!!

Apple decides to install mobile Me, without permission!!

The latest update to Itunes 7.7.0.43 also installs this little program into the preference control panel of your Vista Premium operating system.  It has me irritated by it.  I didn’t ask about this or want this to be in the installed.  So what does this mean?

Apple expects everyone to pay 99$/Year for this service!

Yes that’s right.  If you use Itunes, Apple expects you to have an IPOD or a mac.  That also makes me mad.  I don’t want that on my system.  I am sure you also would like to get rid of that too, so here is how!!

Uninstall Apple Mobile Devices from your add/remove programs section.

[Classic View] Start > Control Panel > Program & Features> Find Apple Mobile Devices and Click Uninstall

[or]

Start > Control Panel > Uninstall programs > Find Apple Mobile Devices and Click Uninstall

After you uninstall the program just refresh your control panel screen by pressing F5 or right click and click refresh.  It should disappear.

Should Apple be allowed to install that without permission?

Adobe Flash tips and Tricks!

By Paul | Jul 24, 2008

Having been using Hulu for the last few months, I’ve had to tweak the Flash Player and I’d thought I share some tips to get your movies and shows to run smoother on some systems.  I will say this, it is not some times the system but the connection to the Internet.  Bandwitdth, for some shows are sometimes the hardest part of getting to watch the show.

From time to time, Check for updates:

Having updates will sometimes resolve the most common issues with the Flash player.  I’ve had that happen in the past, a certain version would not work right with my system.   After updating on those occasions, I’d be ready go!!  So here’s the website to go to download and install the latest version:

Download and Install Adobe Player

Why should I have to check it from time to time?

Adobe seems to not want to tell you if you have the lastest version.  So I’ve got a schedule to check it ever month and see if I have the latest version.  How can you figure that out? By downloading and installing.  If you’ve got the current version then you do not have to install it again!!

Does your DNS still have flaws?

By Paul | Jul 23, 2008

Late the week, I’ve had some concern with the DNS flaws with my ISP.  So I’ve change to another DNS.  So I went and did a test at:

Doxpara

So what does this mean when it says I might be at risk?

Very simple, your DNS provider is not randomizing the ports.  I’ll get to that in a bit.

What is DNS?

The DNS is like a big Phonebook to where you tell it who you want to call, in this case go, and it finds the numbers and takes you there.  It’s like telling a cab driver where you want to visit, just like telling the cab driver to come to my site.  When you enter http://www.tech-linkblog.com into your browser, your telling DNS to go fetch the ip and direct your connection to this site.

So how can I fix this flaw?

Simple, You will need to direct yourself to OpenDNS.  Has Fixed the flaw to help protect you.  How do you use it?  You will tell your system to direct all the DNS queries through that then your ISP DNS.

How to put Linux on a Vista Machine!

By Paul | Jul 22, 2008

Putting Linux on a Vista machine isn’t hard, actually the program I like to use to do it is:

Wubi Logo

So why use it for Vista?  Here’s the answer.  When you use it for Vista you don’t have to have a seperate partition.

As you can see you put it on one drives in a directory.  It installes it without having to have a Linux partition. It will download the ones you want:

As you can see you can install 4 different Ubuntu Distro’s without having to have a linux partition.  I’ve heard some people say, that you actually cheating Linux but I say it’s not cheating, it’s a necessary.  I have to be able to use Linux from time to time because of people use it from time to time!! It does not matter the how much you use it, it is the essence of using it.

Although this isn’t only a Vista program it actually works on Windows XP, 98, and 2000.  So go check this little program out.  Tell me what you think of it,  I actually like this little program.

Understanding your wireless Router

By Paul | Jul 21, 2008

Two things to understanding your wireless router is: secure your router and figure out what you router IP is. This can be difficult because a variety of routers use what they called the internal house IP’s.  Check this site out for several brands of Routers, to figure out your router IP:

http://www.answersthatwork.com/Download_Area/ATW_Library/Networking/Network__4-List_of_default_Router_Admin_Passwords_and_IP_addresses.pdf

BTW you can see the default user and password for most of them, so that tells you how important it is to change those ASAP. <VERY IMPORTANT>

Now what are these used for? I’ll break it down for the novice users, these are used for your location router. A router monitors the network and directs traffic from the Internet to the computer needing that information. It then has to figure out which computer is asking or sending out packets. How does it know each computer, the router uses its’ own internal ip. It gives each computer a number, usually like something like this:
For Example, A Belkin Router:

  1. 192.168.1.2
  2. 192.168.1.3
  3. 192.168.1.4
  4. so on until 192.168.1.255

10 ways to keep your wireless router secure!!

By Paul | Jul 18, 2008

I have been doing quite a few router reworks. I’ve got a wireless G router from my DSL provider and Have had problems with someone in my neighborhood trying to get onto my router. They were trying everything. I wanted to give you some suggestions that would help you keep your secure and have some piece of mind!!

  1. Turn off Signal Identification (What your router name is)- By turning of the signal so no one can see the broadcast name will greatly make it harder for anyone to get onto your router.
  2. Change your router identification – Creating a unique router identification will also make it harder for anyone to guess router identification. Keep the identification something that is unidentifiable to the location where you live.
  3. USE WPA and not WEP – WEP has been cracked so if at all possible use WPA encryption and that too will make it harder for an unwanted guest.
  4. Use a Random Password Generator (Roboform an generate secure random passwords) ["Use one these promo codes to get it cheaper"]By using a random password you prevent hackers from guessing the Network password of your WPA key.

How to get Hulu to add content!

By Paul | Jul 17, 2008

Why do we want to have campaigns?  Easy in order for us to have what we want from hulu we have to get there attention.   It might work and it might not but getting the attention of certain companies is the hardest part of all.  Most of the time the higher rated television companies don’t want to have anything to do with streaming.  They feel it is taking away there core audience.

Is Hulu making it easier for us to watch what we want?

That would be a definite “Yes”  So what do we want Hulu to do?  Easy to put more television shows that we want to watch.  For example here are a few shows and movies that I would like to see come to HULU:

  1. Stargate Atlantis (Sci-fi Channel)
  2. Mythbusters (Discovery Channel)
  3. This Old House (PBS)
  4. Star Trek : TOS to Voyager
  5. The Matrix (all three movies)
  6. Touched by An Angel
  7. KyleXY (You can view it on AbcFamily.com)
  8. 7th Heaven

You’re probably asking how one person can get any of the shows or movies on Hulu?  One person probably couldn’t, but quite a few could.    How You might ask?

Do Pretty girls Fart?

You want to be more anonymous?

By Paul | Jul 15, 2008

Being anonymous isn’t easy but these few steps will help you be out there in the net.  I have several ways to keep your privacy in tack, although it isn’t easy.  Some things you can do to make your life more private is:

In Firefox 3 : Tools>Options>

By making Firefox clear out your third party cookeis you can make people think you’re new.  You need 3rd party cookies for hulu and other places.

In Firefox you will also want to clear your private data every time you close Firefox:

You will also want to make sure that “Always clear my private data when I close Firefox” is checked and then you will click settings:

As you can see all mine are checked to make sure that when I start up Firefox, it starts fresh.  I also recommend you download CCleaner which makes sure all your cache is cleared out from IE to Firefox.  I’ve not tried this with any other browsers but I would think this program would also clear out all the cache.

In response to Jason Calacanis!!!

By Paul | Jul 14, 2008

Jason Calacanis’ First New Email Post.

He retires from blogging and begins bulk emailing?  Is fark?  I think not, in his first email.  He talks about how bloggers over reacts with blogs.

Most of the time you get the people who really love to blog, and those who try to make money.  It comes with the territories, but it isn’t something that we do for ourselves. It’s something that we do for our readers.  So let’s get down to the business at hand.

Is blogging dead?
————————-
Yes, it is. Officially. :-)

Actually, I’ve been thinking about this question and while blogging is
clearly booming, there has been a deep qualitative change in the
nature of the ’sphere. There are so many folks involved in blogging to
today, and it’s moving at a much quicker pace thanks to “social
accelerants” like TechMeme, digg, Friendfeed and Twitter. Folks are so
desperate to be heard–and we all want to be heard that’s why we
blog–that the effort put into being heard has eclipsed the actual
hearing.

Get over it, You’ve got no Privacy on the net!!

By Paul | Jul 12, 2008

I’ve been talking to my friends at work and in other places, they’ve all asked the same question from time to time.  “Is privacy on the internet a possibility?”  and in short my answer is “No, you’ve got no privacy on the Internet!“  This is what I like to refer to as people wanting privacy to be on the internet.  Let’s face it folks, there is no privacy on the internet.  People are worried about Youtube debacle and I understand! In today’s society and time there is no privacy.  If let’s say you’ve come to my site.  What would I find out you?

  1. Your IP
  2. What you searched for in Google, Yahoo, AOL, to get to my site!
  3. Type of Operating System (Windows, Linux, or Macintosh)
  4. Where you just came from, unless you’ve chosen to come to my site directly
  5. You screen resolution
  6. You browser your using!

I don’t tell you this to make you not want to visit my site.  This type of stuff is always going to be recorded by almost 95% websites you visit.  It’s always going to be an unspoken understanding.  I have to keep up to date on what happens on my site.  It’s just normal to get the information and be able to see where everyone is coming from.

A quick note to all that Have installed KB951748

By Paul | Jul 9, 2008

My wife installed the WIndows XP updates without asking me or telling me.  The next thing I found out is she couldn’t access the internet.  If you install KB951748 and have Zonealarm, you will have to unistall KB951748 to get internet Access.

I have to thank TANJENTSDOTCOM. Thanks for the help. If you worry about that update you can always uninstall Zonealarm but I like the program and feel it has some great protection. I don’t know what Microsoft is doing but I think they did not test this thoroughly!! Hope this helps!!

Getting the most out of podcasts!!

By Paul | Jul 8, 2008

So you want to listen to several podcast a day and you don’t know how to do it.  I’ve had so many people ask me how do I listen to 10 to 15 Podcasts a day.  My rule of thumb on this is simple, look at what you throught the day and figure out how you can listen to them.  By doing the lawn, by doing the dishes, or cleaning the house.  You can even have fun and listen to them at work.  So let’s talk about what ones I like to listen to.   This is kinda hard because I’ve get 2 or three daily Tech Cruft which are:

  1. Buzz Out Loud Rating: ★★★★☆
  2. The Gillmor Gang Rating: ★★½☆☆
  3. Computer America [rating 3.5/5]

What podcasts do I listen to more than once?  Here are some interesting the ones I like and Have really cool and great content.

These are the ones that podcast more than once a week.  They do it twice a week.  There is one that does podcast for several areas.  That one I like to listen to get my meat and get all the technology woes.
