Scareware from Antivirus 7

By Paul | Mar 16, 2010

You will see this:

Then it will popup with this little warning:

It tries to download ASetup_2024-6.exe from server 195.5.161.171.   I didn’t download the file because I already knew what that was all about.   I recommend people who have downloaded this file and installed to do a full antivirus with a trusted and known Antivirus software vendor. This Fake Antivirus software is not real and you should be careful what you install or download.

Most of the time, These sites are injected into one's browser by way of a Trojan taking over the system. If left untreated these sites will become more and more profound trying to get you to install them. Most of the time these are installed in unsuspecting computers by way of exploits, backdoors, or unsafe downloading practices. This usually means that if you have it you should remove it by any means necessary because this software has been know to cause more and more trouble as time goes by. This software is fake ware, it tries to tell you have a virus and that they can get rid of it. In fact, this software is not designed with Antivirus engine in mind but to illicit pop ups and warning to raise the users security concerns about the computer in question. Downloading programs from bit torrents or other unsafe ways can and most likely will have these types of programs installed alongside the program you wanted.

Monoprice Still have issues

By Paul | Mar 16, 2010

As you can see Monoprice.com and on their Facebook page, people are still getting Fraudulent charges. I just wanted to talk about this a little to remind people about Credit Card Security. I would expect you once they start to take Credit cards to start using Paypal one time Credit cards if you are going to buy anything from any other retailer. As you can see right now they are going to use Paypal checkout and Google Checkout to make purchases in the coming weeks.

This however is a small step to fixing the problem at hand. They are trying to be as transparent as possible with their customers but they will always have doubt when Monoprice starts to use Credit Cards in the coming future. It is going to be really interesting to see when that does come back up. I encourage everyone to use not give out your True Credit card information online and if you need to buy something online to use the PayPal.

This was a quick post to let people know about the news that is still going around with Monoprice!! Until this is fully fixed I suggest getting your cables from Amazon.com.

Making The A600 Modem Work with Windows 7 X 64 Bit Systems

By Paul | Mar 15, 2010

Ok So you bought your modem and you have Windows 7 (64 bit O/s) but it keeps coming back asking for you to install the A600 modem files. So I wanted to talk briefly about how to get it to work:

  • If you haven’t Bought the Modem yet — You will need to go buy it first to go through this process. The A600 modem is the only one that will work with Windows 7, and that is from Cricket Wireless.
  • Once you receive your Modem — Plug it in!!
  • Go through the new setup process — Let it try to install the software. (You can download the newest software from Cricket directly: Click this link)
  • Once your have install the software you will see the Quicklink modem menu but you will not be able to connect. You will need to go to the Modem virtual CD rom location. This will have a directory in it called ‘WIN‘. There you will find “setupdrv.exe“. You will need to double click that and install the drivers. It will ask how you want to install it, you should pick the recommended settings.

Security Essentials for Windows 7 64 Bit systems

By Paul | Mar 15, 2010

So I have an Windows 7, for two months and would like to talk about some security thoughts that I would recommend to anyone who has a 64 bit system.

Now it is true that 64 bit systems are a little more secure or I would call less exploited because of how many people actually are using 32 bit systems and not 64 bit system. So the virus and exploit writers are focusing on the 32 bit system but sooner or later 64 bit system will become main stay. I am sure it will happen in the coming years, just not sure when.

So I want to talk about just what you should have installed and why you should have some type of security with your 64 Bit systems. I am sure I can hear people asking me about the 64 bit drivers for these programs. I am here to tell you about my experiences with Windows 7. To be truthful, the drivers for programs have been very easy to find and not anywhere hard to use for Windows 7. I have SuperAntiSpyware, AVG 9.0, ZoneAlarm Pro, and Malwarebytes running on this system at any given time.

My Review of Just host and How well they did?

By Paul | Mar 12, 2010

So I was using Godaddy but I talked about in the past that I went to Just Host for my hosting 2 months ago. I did not have any trouble with setting up the service. The Emails to them were terrific, they were nice and prompt.

Why did I switch from Godaddy to Just Host?

I was having some slow responses from Godaddy’s Servers so i thought it would be best to move to a better server.   Not to say Godaddy isn’t good but I thought it was time for a change.   My website has outgrown the servers from Godaddy.    After the transfer, my response time for loading and going to pages increased by at least 300%.   I don’t know if it was a misconfiguration or if it was something I did.   I don’t’ even know if it was Godaddy or if it was something I did with the Wordpress installation on Godaddy.   I can actually load up my pages a lot faster now.

Lately With Roku, We’ve been ordering shows on Amazon

By Paul | Mar 11, 2010

Ever since we got the Roku, I have been buying episodes from Amazon. The shows that we have started to order are quite interesting because of how Hulu like to wait a week before showing that particular episode. So what are the few shows that we decided we must watch when they become available on Amazon are:

Some of these are Over and some of these are just about to begin with like Stargate Universe. I have a Season Pass for it for two reasons. It is cheaper to buy a season pass then to buy a season after it has been release and they will automatically be purchased when they become available. I love the Roku player and how I don’t have to watch it on my computer!!

Amazon.com makes Colorado Associates mad!!

By Paul | Mar 10, 2010

As you know Amazon decided to drop all the associates from Colorado due to the new state tax.  I for one am not really happy with it because that means that if my state decides to have a tax for our online sales and I will be canceled by Amazon as a well.

So to make a point, I will ask all Colorado residents and anyone else who has had a Amazon associate account dropped to click on my links and bookmark them to show Amazon that we are not happy with how they are doing business. For more information I will be adding links were you can check out for yourself and understand just how bad it is becoming:

As you can see there are plenty of stories about Amazon firing Colorado Associates. That is why we need to make it a point to show Amazon, that we are not happy with how they are doing business. I ask that you bookmark my Amazon link and anytime you wanna buy anything from Amazon to use my link.

Using speech recognition can be a very useful tool!!

By Paul | Mar 10, 2010

As I type this up I’d come to realize that I can do this with my speech recognition software installed with my Windows 7 Software.

I’m trying out the new speech recognition from Windows 7 right now and it is working really well. I can do what I have been doing in the past but with my voice. I am not using the keyboard to type this and I’m having such a good time with this new speech recognition is nice.

As you can see I will still have to work on some of the dictation with it because it still hasn’t learned all my talking preferences. I am however enjoyed having not to have to use the keyboard that to write up my blog post. I wanna talk about this and to make a point for people who are interested in the new Windows 7. As you can tell it still needs to work out some bugs, but I am working on it even more. It is like teaching a young child new speech.

Why you shouldn’t mess with your registry!

By Paul | Mar 8, 2010

You going along and Windows seems to be slow and not so responsive. You go and start messing around with the Registry and later when you reboot your systems becomes frozen and nothing you do will get it back.

What is the Windows Registry used for?

The Windows Registry is a hierarchical database that stores configuration settings and options on Microsoft Windows operating systems. It contains settings for low-level operating system components as well as the applications running on the platform: the kernel, device drivers, services, SAM, user interface and third party applications all make use of the Registry. The registry also provides a means to access counters for profiling system performance.
[Wikipedia]

What programs can I use to repair or Clean the Registry?

There are several different programs that can be used to help fix the registry or remove the unnecessary registry entries.  I can suggest a few good utilities to help you fix or repair Windows Registry:

  • Registry Utilities Professional –  This is good program for repairing small registry problems.   This won’t fix major problems but it might help you get Windows back and running.

Online Pharmacies that seem Doubtful!

By Paul | Mar 5, 2010

I’ve been getting Referrer spam from these sites and I researched these types of sites.   I already talked about how you shouldn’t buy from online pharmacies but I figured you’d want to know what I found out!!

So I check out thew contact page and the number isn’t text but a Picture.   The numbers they tell you to call if you need help are (718)313-1498 and (800)532-4808 and Just doing the research I came up with a Rip-off report for the 800 number.  I also found a site with the (718) and a MyWOT that was very negative.   The other thing you should consider is why is the(718) number an unpublished number??   If this is a business then wouldn’t they want to advertise that it is a business.   From what I am seeing you shouldn’t buy anything from this company.   I suggest getting what you need from your local drugstore.

A useful book to read for about this is:

Windows 7 Optimization for Beginners

By Paul | Mar 5, 2010

So you just got Windows 7 on a new system and you want to optimize the system to run smoother. I wanted to talk about how even a novice could do some of the things that might help with that.

If your coming from Windows XP to Windows 7, I would like you to check out some Vista tips that will also help you with Windows 7.

If you bought a OEM version that comes with bloatware, you can always use Autoruns.  What most people don’t know is that Windows 7 is a better version of Windows Vista and that is why I suggest reading those other Vista Articles that I wrote about.   I can still use those tips and tricks from Vista to make Windows 7.   With these tips you can make Windows 7 run better and smoother.

Hulu’s Down by 2, Roku’s Ahead by a Mile!!

By Paul | Mar 3, 2010

As I’ve had the Roku for the past month, I wanted to talk about this a little. I talked about how you can watch Hulu Cheaply on your TV set but that can be a pain a pain.

Now we’ve heard in the past that Hulu might become a pay site.   Although it might just be speculation it would be interesting to find out if they will sooner or later offer this service for people who have Roku to pay a nominal fee per month.

In all truthfulness we haven’t connected my laptop to the Television set lately because of all the new movies and shows that come out on Netflix.  So I thought about how Hulu could make even more money by offering Hulu with a nominal fee to the Roku Community who live in the US.  Even if they only charge $5 dollars a month, I would definitely pay that much.

This is absolutely the best laptop that I have bought in a couple years. It was a deal at $649.99 from Newegg. I do what to talk about this laptop a little for those who would like to know my opinions on it!!

When I got the laptop, I expected to have the GT 130M video card but after getting the laptop up and running. I found that it was a GT 240M instead. This is a better video card and it actually runs the graphics very well. I have tried demos of the really video intensive games and it has run those game flawlessly. The Games that I have run or tried on this laptop are:

Looking for Science Fiction Movies?? Amazon VOD Has them!!

By Paul | Feb 26, 2010

As many of you know I am an avid Star Trek, Stargate, Stargate Atlantis, Farscape, and Science fiction fan. Now you can watch these movies and shows on Amazon. No more will the DVD get scratched, and with the help of the Roku I can watch it on my Television set.

Star Trek VIII: First Contact

Some of the ones you can buy or rent from Amazon Video on Demand are:

Star Trek (2009)
Star Trek: Insurrection
Star Trek: Nemesis
Star Trek VII: Generations
Star Trek: The Motion Picture
Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan
Star Trek III: The Search for Spock
Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home
Star Trek V: The Final Frontier
Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country
Stargate Movie

You can watch and watch until your heart is content and never loose your DVD or scratch them up.    Alone with Netflix I can now watch any Science fiction show and not have to worry about paying for it.   Some series that they have are Star Trek Next Generation, Voyager, Deepspace Nine, and Enterprise series that you can watch and return the DVD.   Although Amazon or Netflix doesn’t have the streaming rights at least you can still watch them for $8.99 a month.   Netflix does have the Farscape most of the series streaming and can be watched on the computer or TV.

Ask the Readers : What’s your family fun night?

By Paul | Feb 26, 2010

As you know I have a family and we before we got Roku and Netflix, we would just play Scrabble or some other game but now since we can Watch virtually any movie.  We’ve changed tactics to include a movie night in our family fun night.    We can sit and watch all those old family classics or New Family friendly movies, but yet it is family time.  In the summer we go out and have a time to run and play with the kids but in the winter you have to be a conservative.   It was that thought that came to me today and I wanted thought this would be a good little discussion for those of use who have families.

What do you do for family fun??

This is a really easy but I suspect that some people will have a hard time explaining their family fun routine.   I just thought it would be a good to find other ideas for me and my family and other readers to find ideas on other activities.

Confirmed: Cricket Wireless Will have Blackberry’s and Androids!!

By Paul | Feb 25, 2010

Photo By: The Truth About Mortgage

I wrote on an article a few weeks ago where there was a rumored Blackberry.    There has been a press release over this.   Cricket Wireless will most definitely have both an Android and Blackberry phones.

This is some fantastic news for those of us who would like to have a Blackberry but don’t want the contracts.    Although this is going to be a small post, I just wanted to let everyone know that it will be happening.   I got this from them directly so it is no longer  Rumored!!

The benefits of linking and setting up a pin with Roku

By Paul | Feb 24, 2010

I recently bought a Roku HD Player from Amazon and I am still loving it.   I wanted to talk about the how you can get the most out of your Roku Player.

Here’s how you get the most of out of your Roku Player:

  1. Link your Roku to Amazon, You will need to put a special code that the Roku player gives you to put type in to Amazon and they use this code to find the Roku player.
  2. Create a Pin, This is something that you should do once you have linked your account to the Roku player. This lets you buy videos without having to use your computer. If you decide to rent or buy a video from amazon all you do is enter your pin to give Amazon the right to charge your credit card. it also helps prevent the kids from buying stuff from Amazon without your special pin.

Fake Porn sites are host to Fake Antivirus installs!!

By Paul | Feb 23, 2010

Fake Adobe update

This site  closeporntube.biz is what I call a fake porn site.   They try to trick you into installing Malware.   I did a Virustotal on the install_flash_player.45263.exe and it comes up with:

As you can tell this tryies to install something suspicfious but most are either think it is Fake AV Trojan.  I’ve talked about this in the past and I would hope people wouldn’t fall for this.  If you have run this type of file install_flash_player.*****.exe.   You should do a full scan with a trust Antivirus and I also suggest Malwarebytes or SuperAntiSpyware to do even more scanning on the infected PC. They will try to scare you into buying their product but it is just fraud. Remember if something tells you on the internet to update a program or file, you best bet is to go the site directly and not trust sites that you have not visited before.

Working with Windows 7 and the 64 bit barrier

By Paul | Feb 22, 2010

I have been using Windows 7 Ultimate 64 Bit, and I am liking this 64 bit system.  I thought I would talk about the difference from a 32 bit system and 64 bit system for those of you who don’t know know.

I have been using the 64 bit for the last few weeks and have really liked the speed and stability of Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium.  I’ve tried using 32 bit programs and I have not had any problems yet.   Let’s Compare the differences.

Other than the 4 Gigabyte memory barrier,  the only thing you really have to worry about is that you can’t run 16 bit programs.   Although you can always get Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition FULL VERSION with SP2 and do it virtually, I’d recommend Virtual PC but you need  Microsoft Windows 7 Professional or Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate to be able to use Windows XP.

I’ve not had any major problems with Windows 7 so I am really happy.   All the drivers for my printers are available from the manufacturer.   I got Hewlett Packard – HP DeskJet F2430 All-in-One Inkjet and they have 64 bit drivers.  It has been working fine ever since I installed the drivers.   Most 32 bit software will work on 64 bit systems.   They even have it’s own 32 directory for programs.

Diablo III ready for Pre-order!

By Paul | Feb 22, 2010

As Blizzard get’s ready to release Diablo IIIAmazon has started to take Pre-orders for this game.   I have played Diablo and Diablo 2, and it has been a great game to play online and off.   I’ve pre-ordered my copy of this game and can not wait for it to come out.   Although the price is a little high $59.99 at least that is what Amazon is expecting to be the final price, it is still going to be quite interesting to play this game.  I am sure the price will be lower but I wouldn’t be able to fathom a price that it will be.   At least with Amazon, I have the final price guarantee, if it goes lower I will be refunded the difference.  So I will pay as much as others,   you should pre-order your copy today!!

Most people don’t know the system requirements but I have heard it is going to be like Starcraft II,  and I figured we would at least tell people what may be the required system specs to play this game:

Reviewing the Logitech Anywhere MX Mouse

By Paul | Feb 19, 2010

I recently purchased the Logitech Anywhere MX mouse, and I must say it is quite impressive. I wanted to talk about it some for those who are curious on how well it works.

Click for More information

Technical Details

  • Device Type: Wireless Mouse with Receiver
  • Connection Type: USB
  • Hand Orientation: Right
  • Tracking Method: Laser
  • Scrolling Capability: Yes
  • Colors: Black
  • Special Features: Blackfield Laser Tracking
  • Special Features: Unifying receiver

I’ve put this through a series of test and I must make a comment “WOW“. I don’t say this often and I don’t say this enough from everything I have done with this mouse it still works magnificently. So let’s talk about:

Who can use this mouse?

Anyone can use this as far as I can tell. The size is just right for small, medium, and large hands. I am a large handed person and it still fits me comfortably. It weighs around one pound and can easily be taken anywhere you go with little or no effort.

Hulu brings Star Trek : Generations

By Paul | Feb 17, 2010

I simply love Star Trek and I am glad they bring this so people can watch it. I am hoping they will bring more movies and/or shows too. It is too bad they aren’t on Roku, but I will bet it will be there soon. If you want to watch other Star Trek Movies you can on Amazon VOD : Star Trek. With the Roku I can watch it on my Television set thanks to Amazon.

Enjoy everyone!

Hulu’s misses out of Roku, Not so wise!!

By Paul | Feb 15, 2010

In 1926 we started to have a way t o see moving images in our living room.    Although it didn’t really take off until 1930’s, we started to gather around the television on it schedule.   We go 80 years in the future and now we can have access to any television program old and new that is being stored on the internet.

On March 28, 2008, Hulu launches a service that lets you stream programs to your personal computer.  We can watch programs without having to worry about the television schedule.

We have started to come of age to such that we are streaming podcasts, Movies, Music, and television shows on the internet.  Now we know Hulu doesn’t have a lot of control on their content.   I even talked about ways to watch Hulu on your television for cheap. We have advertisers who we like and don’t like but that can change.     I say it is the advertisers who has more control of where Hulu goes and not Hulu but that is just speculation.   I blogged a little about the Roku and my impressions of it.

First Impressions of the Roku Digital Player

By Paul | Feb 12, 2010

I recently bought the Roku Digital Player and I am really impressed.   I thought it would be a good idea to at least introduce people who haven’t used the Roku or heard of it.

Roku (pronounced “roh koo”)[1], founded in October 2002, is a privately held Saratoga, California consumer electronics firm which specializes in home digital media products. Their current consumer products line-up includes the Roku SoundBridge, a network music player, and the SoundBridge Radio, a network music player with built-in speakers and subwoofer, AM-FM receiver, volume-ramping alarm clock, preset buttons, SD slot and headphone jack. For retailers, Roku also makes the BrightSign solid-state media player, designed to drive HD displays in a retail environment.

Announced May 20, 2008, Roku is the manufacturer for the first Netflix streaming receiver box. The NXP-powered device runs Linux[3], costs $79.99 and provides unlimited access to Netflix’s streaming catalog, Amazon Video on Demand, and MLB.TV. Roku’s audio products do not use internal storage but rely on Wi-Fi or Ethernet to stream digital audio over a network, either from Internet radio or a computer attached to the same network. Roku introduced the Radio Roku Internet radio directory in August 2007. Radio Roku provides a directory of Internet stations, accessible from a web browser or from SoundBridge players.

A Sneak Peak at my Reviews this month

By Paul | Feb 10, 2010

I wanted to update all you on what to expect in the coming weeks.   I don’t think this will be a big blog post because of all the stuff that I will be reviewing.   For Starters I found this great laptop over at Newegg that I will be talking about once I get a chance to sit down and test them out myself:

5 things I learned while moving to a new Hosting Provider!

By Paul | Feb 8, 2010

If you haven’t noticed, I have switched from Godaddy Hosting to Justhost And I do think the load up time on this blog has double or tripled. We all fall in to that little trap where we want to keep our hosting and domains together and then I started hating the slow speed of the page loading. So that is why I decided to switch. Now this is so much faster on my end, and I am sure it is on your end too. While moving this blog, I did learn some things:

  1. No matter how prepared you think you are, it is never enough –  I don’t say this lightly.   When I started doing the move, I thought I understood how to do it.    I now know, I should of been more prepared by testing it on a local drive by using Xamp.  If I would of done that, I would of figured out that the backup file was incomplete and would of fixed that but I didn’t.   That is why the Site was down for more than 12 hours.

Asked the readers : Are you gonna watch the Superbowl?

By Paul | Feb 5, 2010

It is that time of year again because of all the things that will happen in the next few weeks, I wanted to talk about the SuperBowl. We all have our reasons, and I wanted to know if you are just going to watch the Superbowl ads or are you mainly in it for the SuperBowl itself. I personally love to just watch the ads because they are so funny and hilarious at times. The advertisement companies go all the way out for showing new ads for just Superbowl.

So here is the deal for this one

Make a comment and write down a one sentenced or a paragraph and tell me what your plans are for the SuperBowl? Do you watch it or do you make every effort to not watch it?? Do you watch just for the Ads or do you try not to watch the ads? These are all question that I have and would like some input into what people do during the SuperBowl? I thought this was something I wanted to explore and wanted to ask. You know how to do it. Either leave a comment or you can email me by using the emailing me and tell me what you do during the SuperBowl.
