Cricket Releases the UM185 Broadband Modem

By Paul | Sep 17, 2009

UM185ModemAs you can see Cricket has released the UM185 modem.   I’m quite curious about this modem and will be reviewing next month.   I just wanted to talk about some of the key differences with this one and the A600 Modem.

So you want a quick overview of the differences of this these modems.   At first glance and this could change:

  • No Memory card Slot –  This is more expensive and has no memory slot to add a way to carry all your valuable information with you.  Unlike the A600 which has the capabilities to have to have a MicroSD card this one however doesn’t.
  • Led Status Indicator –  This will make it harder to tell the Strength of the Signal because you have either a RED or BLUE light, Unlike the A600 actually having the Strength Meter or the side to let you know how good of a signal you actually have.   This might cause a problem or two with the understanding why you can’t connect because you wouldn’t know what the signal strength is unless you look at the computer.
  • Both having 3G connection Speed — (EVDO Rev 0, Rev) A which means they should both be fast.  I will be testing this out later on next month.
  • Don’t know if it has a way to boost the Antenna unlike the A600 which you can buy external Antenna’s for.   This is another thing I will need to check out.
  • Both Support English/Spanish Speaking people and also both have a One Year Manufacture warranty.
  • Both of these have an Install Read Only Memory,  which means they have the programs needed to install the software for the system that it will be used on.

Like I said earlier this is what I see key differences with the A600 Modem and The UM185 ModemAlthough I haven’t tested this one out yet.  I intend to review it next month.   I am however hoping they don’t discontinue the A600 it has more features and cost less. (A600 USB Broadband Modem for Free after Instant online web only rebate + Mail in rebate. First month free and free shipping. Buy now!)

I hope this helps you decide right now which one is better suited for your needs and remember these observations aren’t set in stone but to help determine your needs when it comes to the Mobile Internet.
