Is Stargate Universe becoming an Soap Opera??

Stargate Universe

I ask this question because of the season thus far.   I have seen it look like nothing more than melodramatic episodes.   I don’t say this lightly and I know I am not the only one. I have been reading and trying to see what people are saying and I am confused but yet I will get to that later.

Now the writers are mad because of  comments who are behaving idiotically. For example he talks about how this series is not like Stargate SG-1 or for that Matter Atlantis:

SGU is NOT SG-1 or Atlantis.  It’s a different show in terms of tone and characters.  If you’re expecting flawless people, square-jawed heroes, and stories that set up and deliver all the answers over the course of a forty-five minute episode, you WILL be disappointed.  And DON’T expect that to change.  If you don’t like the character interactions, romance, and open-ended story elements introduced to date, you’re in for a looooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooong haul because that’s our show.

Now there is a way to really make the fans mad, introduce a new series with the franchise and expect the fans to accept this. The problem with this concept is that they expect the fanbase who is used to something totally different to not be mad at the writers because they were expecting something like the other two. Now for the writers side they are trying to make this something that will work for the younger adults like the 20 something. I have no problem with them wanting to get the younger generation involved with something that will grow the fan base.

I know I am not the only one that wants to get ride of sex scenes.1234 I just don’t see where the sex scenes will help the plot, and if the writers want to keep the franchise fans base aboard they should consider making this somewhat like the old series. A lot of forums are a buzz over getting rid of the sex scenes and I am hoping the writers get the hint.

Unlike the more kid-friendly SG-1 and Atlantis with its wholesale slaughters of enemy combatants, tortures, stabbings, and occasional live burnings, Universe will touch on the heinous topic of physically intimacy.  These “sex scenes”, which amounted to approximately 1 whole minute of the 270 minutes aired to date, engendered a fair amount of controversy.

It’s not the total amount of sex scenes that is the problem it is the frequency of the scenes. I have seen a sex scene in almost every episode of the Stargate Universe, although there isn’t any nudity, it still leaves a bad taste in my mouth and others. I get tired of seeing the sex scenes on every episode of the this show. I really don’t mind the occasional scene. Oh and Let’s talk about SG-1 and Atlantis, we never really saw any of the crew torturing people and we also very rarely used the knife or saw the splatter blood effect. If they want to talk about just using the knife in combat then I don’t see the problem but showing the sex scene when they could easily just show that something happened like that and not actually see it. While on the subject of romance, I don’t believe Chloe and Mathew Scott are romantically involved, to me they just make me believe they do not have this deep relationship. If you want me to believe they are involved, then more talking and less sex, make sure there is a connection. Right now I think those two are in it for sex, and that in my book is not romance. I am sure others agree or disagree that is their prerogative.

There needs to be a story arc, in which we can see a plot develop over a full season. Just like the show House, we have seen him develop and have an arch of plots in each season where he has to come to terms with one side of his personality or have something like his drug habit be exposed. We never know what the season will bring but that story arc that they have been using will always bring back the fans for more. Just like Deep Space Nine, we had a good season story arc, either it was the dominion or the Cardassians we had to worry about but each season brought us drama, conflict, and morals. We Grew to like the characters and understood where they came from. This is what should be done with series whether the writers like it or not if they want to make this survive another season they will need to change their tactics.

The last bit of advice I can add to make this show even better is more action and comedy. If you remember there was quite a bit comedic relief in Star Trek Next Generation. If you remember the android, Data, he was always making me laugh and smile because of that Geeky or Nerdy humor. Most of the Science Fiction base are those Geeky or Nerdy people who want to see all the possibilities of the future. So they see a character they can grow to like and watch, because of the geeky humor of the character. In that same respect, the Character of Eli could well become the one I like the most because of the possible humor to come, if they would focus more on his humor and his ability to be “Mathboy” this series could very well become my most enjoyable series to watch but for right now, I feel like I am pulling teeth with this series due to all that has went on with this series.

SG-U is a soap opera. The production staff cares nothing for the fans so I see no reason to continue to watch it.
