The Frustrations of Wordrpess 2.8
Comments Off
Wordpress 2.8 was released Yesterday morning, and by Yesterday afternoon people were complaining about it. Some of the issues seemed to steam from a minor template change in 2.8 to prevent people from editing or using Plugins.
Now I have talked about backing up important data, that includes your website. You will never know when that back up software will be valueable and when you need to restore it.
Just like everyone else I have had problems with my ability to update my blog or update my Advertising. Although unlike others who have a lot of widgets on the sidebar for there users, mine are html and not a plugin version. Although I didn’t have as much problems as others, I did however have problems with the Back up process. I used Wordpress Database Backup and I had the file that it gave me but the PHPMyAdmin would not restore the database that I was given from the plugin. So in the process of trying to fix my database, I had a few hours of downtime on my blog. If your a regular visitor you might of seen the message “Database Error” when you visted my site. I have since then fixed the problem With the help of my support team to get my website back up and running.
Securing your Windows Machines
Comments OffAfter a Long day at work, you sometimes feel like there isn’t much you want to talk about. Then this idea comes to me? Why do people blog and why do people talk about security?
I’ve come to realize something, I’m not one who was grew up understanding bits from bytes. I grew up as any family does fighting with my siblings.
Having been blogging the past few years, it seems like only yesterday that I started blogging. Cliche I know but still very much true. Most blogs do what they know, I aim to learn and teach each day I blog. Like days like this when the world is pretty much quite and the remnants of the conficker worm dies to a rumble.
After a day long battle with my wife’s system, I grow to wonder if there is something I should do differently with how to prevent Viruses and Worms on her system. So I’ve groomed my Knowledge base and come up with 5 good points when it comes to locking down your Windows Machines:
Free Syncronization and Backup programs
Comments OffSo I talked about finding some free backup utilities on the Mike Tech Show Listener Roundtable Show # 234.
I said I would publish some good free ones programs to backup your system files and I think I have done it. Here’s are some great ones that I recommend for anyone who doesn’t want to pay for a backup program:
Allway Sync – Works with Windows Vista/XP. It supports : Hard Drives, Removable Hard Drives, Network Drives, Amazon S3, FTP Server, Offsitebox.com, and WEBDAV Folder. This program is also quite portable and can be used on more than one computer with the portable version.(A600 USB Broadband Modem for Free after Instant online web only rebate + Mail in rebate. First month free and free shipping. Buy now!)
ViceVersa — Windows 98, Me, 2000, XP, Vista. Vice Verse FREE will compare files in two folders (source and target) and synchronize file differences. There isn’t much else you can do with this but It does look to be good for small backups and older system.
Acebackups — is a powerful tool to create completely secure backups of your data. Store your data on any local storage device, on CD, DVD or on your remote FTP server!

For every computer there comes a time when you have a problem with hardware or software. This is for those who want to learn the signs of possible fixes for having hard drive problems. Although if you know you’re hard drive is dieing then you better back it up as quickly as possible. You will of course need to get the back up software to protect your data. If you have special drivers you will need to backup yours drivers. If you have an OEM system then you will need to backup the Hidden Partition.
So what are the warning signs of a hard drive failure:
- Unexpected freezing of Windows — When Windows Locks up and you have to reboot or getting a Blue Screen of Death. You have no choice but to restart because you can’t do anything with windows.

What is an OEM?
Many laptops or Desktops now a days have this hidden partition that is used for OEMS. An OEM or original equipment manufacturer for those who don’t know is a company that sells a system with it’s own branding or services. It varies from company to company just what they sell to the consumer. Having Said that, let’s talk about this Hidden Partition.
Why do I have a Hidden Partition on my drive?
Disaster Preperation — 102 Driver Backups
Comments OffIn my previous post about backing up, I talked about the need to backup the sensitive data. This one I will talk about backing up the important drivers. There are several ways to backup the system drivers. Although this is not always needed. You might however have a program or two that you no longer have the CD or program to install the drivers for. I thought we talk about this and ways you might be able to back up your drivers with.
In computing, a device driver or software driver is a computer program allowing higher-level computer programs to interact with a hardware device.
A driver typically communicates with the device through the computer bus or communications subsystem to which the hardware is connected. When a calling program invokes a routine in the driver, the driver issues commands to the device. Once the device sends data back to the driver, the driver may invoke routines in the original calling program. Drivers are hardware-dependent and operating-system-specific. They usually provide the interrupt handling required for any necessary asynchronous time-dependent hardware interface.

Stop botnets in its tracks With a Firewall!
According to PC World and I’ll quote:
According to FireEye chief scientist Stuart Staniford, detection rates are so poor that, on average, only around 40 percent of security software can detect binaries during the period of greatest infectivity and danger, namely the first few days after a particular variant starts being used by botnet builders.

In a recent virus storm, We have people finding my site because of a Good Firewall. No if he didn’t have anything but Windows firewall then it would of gotten through and you would not of known about it. So let’s talk about how to prevent botnet attacks. This is relatively easy and if you follow some common rules. You to could be less likely to be infected. I will say this most people don’t do these common tips and they should do them.
Backup your Mozzila Thunderbird profiles
Comments OffSo you have all this mail you want to back up in case something terrible happens to your hard drive. So here is ways to backup your email and other programs in Vista. I think Vista has a new way of keeping program profiles in an hierarchical setup. So what is the HIDDEN directory it is:
C:\Users\[USER]\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles
Now as you can see your Thunderbird profile is in a hidden directory in the AppData Directory. You can easily get to the hidden directory by typing %appdata% {enter} in the search bar of Vista. Now How do you backup and restore. The program I use to backup is GoodSync. I send the data to the cloud and when I need it I can restore it back to the directory. Now what about restoring, if you have to do a complete re-install of Thunderbird you can always copy over the back up to the Thunderbird Profiles directory and install Mozilla Thunder bird and it should see it. If by chance you load up Thunderbird and you have to re add everything you would have to delete everything in that directory and then restore from the back up.
Schedule Your Time Machine Backups with TimeMachineScheduler

![]()
Mac OS X only: Reschedule your Time Machine backup intervals from the default (which backs up once an hour) to a more appropriate schedule to fit your needs–anywhere from every one to twelve hours. Granted, the per-hour backup schedule means you’re that much more likely to have all your data backed up in case you run into a problem, but some people on older systems have reported performance slow-downs when Time Machine is backing up. In those cases, TimeMachineScheduler might be the perfect solution. TimeMachineScheduler is freeware, Mac OS X Leopard only.
Hot Image Your PC’s Hard Drive with DriveImage XML

You don’t need a complicated boot CD or expensive software to create a restorable system disk image for your PC: free utility DriveImage XML can save a full, working snapshot of your Windows hard drive while you work on it. (That’s hot.) When your PC crashes and burns or just slows down over time, the best insurance you can have is a mirror image of your operating system, complete with drivers, user settings, software applications, and documents in one place. A while back we covered how to partition and image your Windows hard drive using the Linux-based System Recovery Boot CD, a process that involves command line work, disk-burning, rebooting, and video driver wrangling. With DiskImage XML, imaging your PC’s hard drive is a matter of a few clicks, no reboots required. Let’s check it out.

Mimic Time Machine with rsync
Comments Off
Like the concept of Leopard’s Time Machine but aren’t running Leopard on your machine? The IMHO weblog steps through how to mimic the backup chops of Leopard using the rsync command line tool. By default rsync is Unix-only tool, but we’ve covered how to use rsync on Windows as well, so this method applies to pretty much everyone. And while you won’t get the stylish graphical interface of Leopard’s Time Machine, you will get incremental, full backups of your drive.
Create A Backup Image of Your System with DriveImage

Windows only: Freeware application DriveImage XML creates and restores images of any drive or partition on your system. That means that next time you freshly install Windows on your computer (whether XP or Vista), you can back up that clean and sparkling system state with DriveImage XML. If things get messy down the road, you can just as easily restore that fresh system state with the program’s simple interface. We’ve given you the complete guide to system partition imaging and restoring from the open source perspective, but the freeware, Windows-only DriveImage XML offers a much more user-friendly alternative for the faint of heart.
Vista SP1 Recovery Disc
Comments OffOne of the new administrative tools Windows Vista Service Pack 1 provides is the ability to create a recovery disc. At first, the name might fool you into thinking the type of discs system manufacturers provide to you when you purchase a new computer to restore your computer to a factory state, but this is not that. A more appropriate name would be “Windows repair disc”.
To be blunt, this tool creates merely a slimmed-down Windows installation disc. It takes a normal Windows installation disc image and strips out all the “installation” functionality leaving only the repair tools and common system files.
I wonder how this will work with Windows and the DRM? Will it even be left in the final version? I would think companies are going to like this.
Fifteen Back up programs to save your data!

There’s no way around it: Malware happens, drive failure happens, natural disaster happens. If your data isn’t backed up, it’s gone–or it will require an extremely expensive, not-certain-to-succeed recovery operation. If all you have on your system are scribblings and unimportant downloads, you might not care. But you probably have something of value: scanned pictures of ancestors, wedding videos, a presentation you worked all week on, the song that’s going to make you famous.
It pays to back up, and it has never been easier to do so. No matter what method you’re most comfortable with, be it traditional file-based backup, image backup, or continuous data protection, one of the following fifteen tools will do the trick.

Even though they aren’t free I’ll still take a look at them to see if I can afford one or two of them.
