Multi-millions need not apply. New visually intuitive job site challenges the industry standard without staggering capital reserves.

Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) May 22, 2007 – As with many new web applications, the Free Agents Jobs website, www.theFreeJobs.com, follows a trend of budget-limited entrepreneurs taking a chance on the web. The internet has brought about many exciting ways of getting one’s feet wet in the business world without storefronts, secured loans and material overhead. Free Agents Jobs illustrates how inspired individuals are producing great web applications with limited resources and saved money, changing the face of internet business while challenging the major players in every online segment.

Just such a challenge was issued by William Belk, proprietor of Free Agents LLC, a California company. Investing in a formula that works for web companies like 37 Signals, Craigslist and Bloglines, Free Agents creates simple web applications that focus on a single task and do it well.

Free Agents Jobs is a direct response to the current industry standard. Disenchanted with a seemingly endless supply of job sites that focus on fitting the most information and entries on a single, monotonous page, Free Agents developed a powerful visual alternative. Their website, www.theFreeJobs.com, is a simple search platform that helps job seekers find jobs by way of a colored tab system. Just as important, each job entry includes icons that quickly transmit essential job information. With a single glance, viewers are shown each job’s compensation, proximity, type of job (full-time, part-time, contract, freelance) and what kind of employer posted the job (company, individual or recruiter). Each job listing is also ‘tagged’ with its respective industry and date listed.

The Free Agents formula translates to a job search website that is visually intuitive and easy on the eyes. Viewers are no longer required to squint and reread job titles that all look the same. Powerful search and filter features, informative icons and their colored tab system set Free Agents Jobs apart from all other job search sites.

Unaffected by the demands and unrealistic expectations of investors and venture capital groups, Free Agents has been able to focus on their products instead of their hype <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2Fs%3Fie%3DUTF8%26x%3D0%26ref_%3Dnb%5Fsb%5Fss%5Fi%5F0%5F5%26y%3D0%26field-keywords%3Dmacintosh%26url%3Dsearch-alias%253Daps%26sprefix%3DMacin&tag=techlinkblogc-20&linkCode"target="_blank"rel="nofollow"title="MAC" >machine, corporate structure, or administrative backlog. Functioning as a self-proclaimed ‘little guy’ has its perks. Not every online property launches with million in reserve. The little guys are here too, and they’re doing some great things.

I’ve saw two different security firms talking about Bank of America and I wanted to share with you:

Picture from F-secure

The two sites are F-secure and Pandalabs who are talking about Bank of America and how they try to get you to install malware. With Adobe having just sent out the new updates last month it looks like spammers are using this to get people to install Malware.

It is also been known to be floating around in Facebook this spam. So if you get a link going to a site you don’t know about to see a video and it says you need a codec or the Adobe update you should turn right around and leave site. You should always type in the url of Your Bank and not go there through links.

From what they are saying it monitors Network traffic and Steals ICQ, POP3, and IMAP passwords. If you find network traffic going to Hong Kong IP, then it is time to check to make sure all your Virus definitions are up to date and you’ve installed an Anti-virus and Firewall. I would encourage users to report it to Phishtank so that any other unsuspecting user or person going to that site will be warned.

Thinking back to PIFTS.EXE.

Thinking to this very incident looks to something out of the movie “Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events“. I won’t go into much detail but here is what I want answers to about the PIFTS.EXE. You see after I have read a great article talking in detail about this, I have also come to the conclusion something isn’t right.

The blog owner known as Anshar in the forums on the Symantec points out some key events. He wanted to point out that the users who were posting were not violating the TOS and was posting questions that look to asking about this file. See screen capture of what I took. This one picture doesn’t prove his theory in whole, but does bring up some suspicions. This actually might be them trying to find a ‘scapegoat’ so to speak. He also talks about what others are asking? What is PIFTS.EXE? People seem to still have not be answered that question.

Although, in Norton’s defense there seems to be a lot of information that they have to sort through. I’ll admit this information people are asking should be really simple to find in the Symantec Databases somewhere. I will not say they are hiding anything major but I do think something is going on that we are not aware of. Here’s some other thoughts to considers? If Norton needed to find out who was using <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2Fs%3Fie%3DUTF8%26x%3D0%26ref_%3Dnb%5Fsb%5Fnoss%26y%3D0%26field-keywords%3DWindows%26url%3Dsearch-alias%253Daps&tag=techlinkblogc-20&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=390957"target="_blank"rel="nofollow"title="Windows" >Windows 7, couldn’t they of asked or even made a simple site redirect to find that information, after all anytime you visit a site you have that information sent to the stats. I could in theory find out how many visitors are visiting from <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2Fs%3Fie%3DUTF8%26x%3D0%26ref_%3Dnb%5Fsb%5Fss%5Fi%5F0%5F5%26y%3D0%26field-keywords%3Dmacintosh%26url%3Dsearch-alias%253Daps%26sprefix%3DMacin&tag=techlinkblogc-20&linkCode"target="_blank"rel="nofollow"title="MAC" >Macs and how many are on older systems. That would be very easy to do with Google Analytics.

Now with that said let’s talk about Why it took almost a whole day for them to release a public statement about what happened. I might be wrong but if I was a stockholder, I’d of demanded them to send that out ASAP instead of waiting 20 to 24 hours. Although I’m not trying to make any more conspiracy theories, I do think the Streisand effect came into effect and people are feeling like Norton did something they shouldn’t have. In which case, Norton probably made “A fail whale” attempt of making it better when they started to delete the post.

I’ve been watching the Norton forums trying to make sense of all this, and I do know that Norton have lost people’s faith in them and people are removing their product off there systems if Norton doesn’t start answering questions that need to be answered.

Norton has released the information of PIFTS.EXE and what it does. Although I am sure people are going to argue about what it does or doesn’t. I wanted to post this for people to check out and consider for yourself.

I will be reporting this to Phishtank. This is scareware which means there is no real VIRUS because and you
Should never believe the screens when you see something like this. According to Wikipedia:

Some websites display pop-up advertisement <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2Fs%3Fie%3DUTF8%26x%3D0%26ref_%3Dnb%5Fsb%5Fnoss%26y%3D0%26field-keywords%3DWindows%26url%3Dsearch-alias%253Daps&tag=techlinkblogc-20&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=390957"target="_blank"rel="nofollow"title="Windows" >windows or banners with text such as: “Your computer may be infected with harmful spyware programs. Immediate removal may be required. To scan, click ‘Yes’ below.” These websites go as far as saying that a user’s job, career, or marriage would be at risk. Products using advertisements such as these are often considered scareware. serious scareware applications qualify as Rogue software.
[Via Wikipedia]

So if you are worried you have a virus or think you have a virus I would advise you to download one of the free Many anti-virus software and firewall. This is nothing new with the companies who are doing this but don’t buy anything because people are trying to scare you into thinking you have a virus. That rarely is a valid software and you should use the ones that you trust. If you find a site like that please report them to Phishtank and other sites that way we can protect everyone who goes there.

So I got this Tweet from Mai_ling on twitter and she said:

So I did some digging around the net and found it is something that is a common practice for ISP’s to block PORT 25. If you want to find out if <a href="http://www.tech-linkblog.com?wp_ct=51"target="_blank"rel="nofollow"title="Cricket" >Cricket is blocking your mail service you can easily follow these instructions to see if port 25 is actively being blocked. So what are some options in fixing this little problem.

You could set up your email client to receive on port 25 but send out on the SMTP server of Gmail. This would be useful for people who want to send mail out but not have to change there email address. People will still see it coming from whatevername@whatever.com. You can tell Thunderbird to send out on the port and yet use your domain as your email address.

Another possible solution that may work for some is to sign up for Google Apps. The downside of this is It cost 50$ a year but that is 4.20$ a month to be added on to your Cricket Modem charge. This looks promising and has a 30 day trial so, if it works then you will know before you have to pay for anything. This should be dealt with by Cricket, they should have a way for there customers to send and receive email without having to jump through hoops to send email and receive email.

Microsoft sends e-mail messages to subscribers of our security communications when we release information about a security software update or security incident. Unfortunately, malicious individuals can and have sent fake security communications that appear to be from Microsoft.

So if you get an email from Microsoft you’ll probably want to delete it. Any Microsoft communications will be sent from the Update center. You should never install software that is from an untrusted website. If you are concerned you should check the web and find out what people are saying about the situation and see if it is a scam or true!! Remember only you can prevent a virus or Malware!

Getting to the A600 Program Files

So you want to see this screen when you plug in the A600 Broadband Card:

But doesn’t pop up! I found out why. If you installed it one time or another and had a problem with the installation and it won’t pop up with that screen. You’ll need to take this first step:

Uninstall THE USB DRIVERS for A600
C:\Program Files\<a href="http://www.tech-linkblog.com?wp_ct=51"target="_blank"rel="nofollow"title="Cricket" >Cricket\USB DRIVERS\Uninstall.EXE

Once you do that you will see need to reboot and then try to insert the A600 Modem into the USB slot. It should pop up with t hat screen or you should see the drive become available.

I’ve also took the drive and copied the program files into a sub Directory of the 4 Gig drive installed in the A600 and I decided to help everyone else out by uploading the self-extracting program to rapid share:

Cricket-A600-Program.exe Bit torrent file

This is the file I created on Memory card for when I need it. If you are uncomfortable downloading this because your worried about virus, then follow the directions on how to uninstall the software to get to your Cricket software for the A600. I did this to make it easier later on to re-install the software without having to uninstall software. Let me know if this helps. You should consider downloading Free Anti-virus Software and free Firewalls to protect your system if you haven’t already!!

Reviewing the 3G A600 Cricket Modem

So I got the Modem and wanted to test out the speed being stationary, So I go to my usual site Speedtest.net look at the speed, check below for speed.
As you can see this went fairly well. It does depend on your Cricket Coverage area. So you want to hear all about it.

First thing if you are upgrading from the UM100 Broadband Card, You’ll want to uninstall the Quicklink Software. To do that you can uninstall it by going to:

Computer > C: Drive > Program Files > <a href="http://www.tech-linkblog.com?wp_ct=51"target="_blank"rel="nofollow"title="Cricket" >Cricket > Quicklink > UNWISE.EXE

(This will uninstall the Quicklink software, I’d suggest after you uninstall it you reboot.)

How does the USB Modem work?

Once you do that you can then insert the A600 Modem into your USB. The Nice thing about this is the software for the Modem is on the Modem itself, so you don’t loose the CD for the modem. It currently only supports <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2Fs%3Fie%3DUTF8%26x%3D0%26ref_%3Dnb%5Fsb%5Fnoss%26y%3D0%26field-keywords%3DWindows%26url%3Dsearch-alias%253Daps&tag=techlinkblogc-20&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=390957"target="_blank"rel="nofollow"title="Windows" >Windows and <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2Fs%3Fie%3DUTF8%26x%3D0%26ref_%3Dnb%5Fsb%5Fss%5Fi%5F0%5F5%26y%3D0%26field-keywords%3Dmacintosh%26url%3Dsearch-alias%253Daps%26sprefix%3DMacin&tag=techlinkblogc-20&linkCode"target="_blank"rel="nofollow"title="MAC" >MAC <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2Fs%3Fie%3DUTF8%26x%3D0%26ref_%3Dnb%5Fsb%5Fss%5Fi%5F0%5F5%26y%3D0%26field-keywords%3Dmacintosh%26url%3Dsearch-alias%253Daps%26sprefix%3DMacin&tag=techlinkblogc-20&linkCode"target="_blank"rel="nofollow"title="OSX" >OSX operating system but I have seen there is a work around to use the A600 Modem with Linux if your wondering.Once you insert it into the USB you’ll find you have a new Drive. It will say a Cricket CD Drive with 24 megs used. You’ll want to run that program on the Cricket CD and that will install the software.

The Connection

As you can see this is the provided application to connect to the Cricket Network and the speed and signal strength can differ from location to location due to coverage areas. This application can do several different functions:

Connecting to Cricket

Text Messaging (Free with broadband connection)

Bandwidth Monitor (Helps makes sure you don’t use to much Bandwidth, they do have a soft cap of 5 gig’s but haven’t affected me yet.)

Statistics, this is good for those who want to try to get the most out of the modem.

Logs, Also good for those who want to keep track on how much they used the modem. It however only logs activity on the system it is connected to.

Activation — Seems to help get updated tower positions when your traveling and can be done as long as you can get a signal

Pro’s to this EVDO MODEM:

Memory Slot to have backups on files in case the worst case scenario happens (1 to 4 Gigbyte Capabilities)

Speed and Bandwidth (See above for speed test)

No loosing CD — I have the program files online if you need them.

Independent card reader without having to install the Modem Software.

Able to take the modem with you as you go. (There is a clip slot for you to carry it anywhere you go.)

Found out there is an External antenna connector and will be looking at Antenna’s for it in the future.

Swivel USB port, You can swivel it up or down 90 degrees or side to side 180 degrees. (X and Y Axis)

Cons:

If you use it primarily internet you’ll expect some slow downs from time to time during HIGH Peak Zones.

This has a dormant signal feature that I will have to figure out how to disable but easily fixed by reconnecting to the tower. You can get out of dormant mode by web surfing, just load up your browser and the dormant mode will go away.

Twitter Comments:

@Laforge129 I sure am trying out the Cricket broadband.!I just started it last week and so far it never ceases to amaze me! (Via Twitter)

Conclusion

I and others would recommend the Cricket Broadband Modem a600 to anyone who wants an inexpensive and portable internet connection for $40 dollars and no contracts. Though with all the things you can do with this modem makes it an invaluable extra incentive in buying this modem. You should always check the Coverage area for Cricket and make sure you are able to use this modem in the first place. I’ll have another update on this later on but I’m really impressed with all the features of this modem.

I hate Snopes Spam

As you know Snopes is used to find out about urban Legend and Rumors:

I received a Virus alert from my RSS feed about Email virus warning. It even adds a Snope URL. The Author just copies and pasted the virus warning into the blog without even going to Snopes.

According to Snopes and I’ll quote:
Although the Postcard virus is real, it isn’t a “BIG VIRUS COMING” (it’s already been around in multiple forms for a long time now), it will not “burn the whole hard disc” of your computer, CNN didn’t classify it as the “worst virus” ever, and it doesn’t arrive in messages bearing a subject line of ‘Invitation.’

[Via Snopes]

Now as you can tell the link described in the blog post was “http://www.snopes.com/computer/virus/postcard.asp”. If you went there, you’d have seen this as a not really true and some parts of this might be but that part about burning your <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2Fs%3Fie%3DUTF8%26x%3D0%26ref_%3Dnb%5Fsb%5Fnoss%26y%3D0%26field-keywords%3DHard%2520Drive%26url%3Dsearch-alias%253Daps&tag=techlinkblogc-20&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative"target="_blank"rel="nofollow"title="hard drive" >Hard drive or even consider the Worst virus isn’t true.

Some things you need to consider before forwarding anything is:

Is it completely True?

Is it Legitimate? (True blown warning about something like a product recall or something important like that)

Does it Say to Forward? (if so it is probably not wise)

is it from a Friend (If so you might want to remind the friend nicely that it isn’t nice to send spam)

If you follow some of these suggestions you’ll be making the Internet a far better place for everyone. Remember if you don’t know, it’s time to learn. if you do know, it is time to teach. These are the fundamental aspects of using the internet the right way. Also if it is a fake virus warning you should tell them to get a Free Anti-virus and Firewall to better protect them. Also remind them that if they keep their system updated then they shouldn’t be too worried. Remember only you can prevent a Computer Virus and it’s up to you keep your system up to date.

Cracking and Warez sites are Host of Trouble!!

It is nothing to laugh at and should be understood that gamers have no freedom right now. That said this new Variant to Virux Trojan is in regards to Win32/Vitro Trojan. It seems tobe infecting .exe and .Scr files just like this.

According to Trend Micro:

The downloaded malware include variants under the FAKEAV, TDSS, and VUNDO families. Infection chains, however, are notable for the presence of VIRUT and VIRUX malware. VIRUX and VIRUT attacks were initially about the volume of infected PCs. The numbers are massive enough to worry Web users and security researchers: around 20,000 PCs are infected per day
Read more: “Crack Sites Distribute VIRUX and FakeAV“

Now it seems to be more and more sites with getting computer infected. It also seems the Malware writers are using these servers for helping infect essentially gamers computers. So for the time being, if you have a favorite game and you want to:

No-CD Crack (This is good for those who want to play the game without the CD)

Key Gen Cracks (This is used for pirated version of a game)

Update Cracks (This is used to prevent CD checking or Also prevent Version Checking)

Game Cheats (This is usually a small program like a bot or some other way for the gamer to cheat)

And should not be Downloaded or USED!! I don’t say that lightly, because Gamers feel they should be able to play any game they want. Although this post will probably make the Gamer developers happy, I do this to tell people that these virus writers are using the gamers to distribute the Virus. I encourage all the gamers out there, that don’t want to loose their games to not download any more of these types of cracks. It seems the virus writers are wanting to infect systems and slow you down. You don’t want to slowed down do you? Please consider getting a Firewall and a Free Anti-virus software to better protect your system.

With Phishing attempts going on with the TINYURL redirect website, I thought I would show you how you could prevent from going to a site you don’t want. Tinyurl.com has a great little feature, although it is a feature based on your cookies. It however will help prevent you from going to a site that you don’t know anything that about. It’s called the Preview Feature, and is available to any user who wants to use it.

As you can see if you enable it and you go to a click on a tinyurl, you will see this:

As you can see, if you click any TINYURL links you will automatically be told where that link is redirecting you to. This however only works with there being a cookie left behind in your system to let tell Tinyurl that is has to show the link first. So if you clean your cookies out from time to time, you will need to enable it every time after you clean the browser cookies. This will help prevent you from being phished because you will be able to tell if it is the right site in the first place. If not then you don’t have to visit that site. This should be enabled on all Short URL Sites, I hope they make it a mandatory for any site that redirects. This would help stop phishing and scammers because they can’t hide behind unknown url. Only time will tell though, these sites are always going to have problems but this would solve so many problems.

PolyMorphic Win32:Vitro Most Viraulent Virus

This seems to be an virus that is getting some people hit hard. I wanted to blog about this because of the nature of Virus and Trojans. I have read reports that this might be from Online Movies, and I have to say this is one reason why you must stay away from certain online movies. I am going to take a guess that this virus requires a special CODEC, and you downloaded it and installed it. It Could also be the update the Adobe Flash player idea to but still results in getting the Virus.

As I said before you take a risk when you go to sites you don’t trust or know anything about. You also should know that if you need a “SPECIAL” codec, you should just go on to another site. These sites that claim they need this special codec means only one thing they want to install something without your Knowledge.

So what is this Virus:

The Virut family of viruses uses polymorphism to hide from all <a href="http://www.tech-linkblog.com?wp_ct=76"target="_blank"rel="nofollow"title="Anti-Virus" >anti-virus protection, it infects executable files. File infection makes it very hard to repair a system that has been infected. W32/Vitro injects code in running processes and hooks the following functions in ntdll.dll which transfers control to the virus every time any of these function calls are made.

* NtCreateFile
* NtCreateProcess
* NtCreateProcessEx
* NtOpenFile
* NtQueryInformationProcess

[via Avast Forums]

After you get this very bad Virus you are done for. You would need to install the Operating system from backups or even start a new. This seems to be building this week and there isn’t much you can do once your infected. I do recommend a good Anti-virus and Firewall but that wouldn’t fix the problem right now. You will need to pull your backups out and start the process. I suggest a complete wipe and then do the Restoring the backups. This little virus likes to infect any .EXE it can so just restoring the <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2Fs%3Fie%3DUTF8%26x%3D0%26ref_%3Dnb%5Fsb%5Fnoss%26y%3D0%26field-keywords%3DWindows%26url%3Dsearch-alias%253Daps&tag=techlinkblogc-20&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=390957"target="_blank"rel="nofollow"title="Windows" >Windows Directory will not help. Remember only you can prevent from getting infected.

ThePirateBay might be blocked in the US

I was looking around on Google and thought I just for giggles check out the Piratebay complaints. I tried going to the site and here’s what Popups:

I tried on OpenVPN and my Local ISP, It keeps saying that. I then tried on my Cricket Modem and it tells me the connection has been interrupted, like something stops the connection in the first place. I can ping it and I can Tracert the Site but I can’t even view it. I would like to know if Anyone else is having this problem also. Although I’ve not checked Thepiratebay.org complaints for quite some time because I’ve been so busy with my website. If you want to watch your favorite shows check out these sites like Hulu, CBS, NBC, ABC, ABC FAMILY and TNT.TV for free. I am just curious as to what happened and does this have anything to do with Net Neutrality? Anyway I wanted to talk about this and see what people are saying. Anyone know what is going on? Let’s talk about this and help everyone by saying what you know. I don’t know if Thepiratebay.org is down but I do wonder if someone is preventing people from getting to the website. I’ll update when I have more information.

I find this a very useful program for people who have a multitude of problems, from not being able to get on the net to computer virus infections. This is really good for big businesses that want to update a lot of systems in easy way without having to wait for downloads of updates to install. You can take a DVD and update on the fly within Mins. DVD being Cheap or buying them in bulk helps saves time and money for the company. Less time spent downloading the updates and more time actually getting work done. As with the Conflicker, Downadup, and to some the Conflickr Trojan, if you got infected with that little worm. This would help install the updates that it prevented you from doing in the first place. I also found that once you download do the update the files are kept on the <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2Fs%3Fie%3DUTF8%26x%3D0%26ref_%3Dnb%5Fsb%5Fnoss%26y%3D0%26field-keywords%3DHard%2520Drive%26url%3Dsearch-alias%253Daps&tag=techlinkblogc-20&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative"target="_blank"rel="nofollow"title="hard drive" >hard drive so you no longer have to redownload them again. You just update the updates every second Tuesday of the month and it downloads the newest patches and creates a whole new ISO for you to burn.

Q: How can I create the offline update CD images automate, for example via a “scheduled job”?
A: Create a new batch file in the “cmd”, eg “DownloadUpdatesAndCreateISOImage.cmd”. Add the desired calls of

“DownloadUpdates.cmd” and “CreateISOImage.cmd” with the necessary parameters in this new file. The file might for

example have the following contents:

@ echo off
call WXP download updates eng
call CreateISOImage WXP eng

Then set a “time-controlled contract” for the new script “DownloadUpdatesAndCreateISOImage.cmd” to your desired

time. For example, after each Microsoft Patchday create new images, select every second Wednesday of the month.

[Via The FAQ's Documentation (Translated Via Google)]

As you can see you can have it do a script and be ready for you in the morning. You then just take it out of the drive and install where you need to install the day after the updates are issued. On another Note if you have clients who use Windows office Xp, 2000, 2003, 2007 then this will also help:

This is nice if you have clients who use the Microsoft Office Suites also. Some Malware will often try to infect people’s systems through a office script or some other vector. So this will also prevent infections or hackers from getting onto the system by updating this also. You can have this added to each and every DVD ISO you make to include these as you update the patches also.

Warning Signs of Hard Drive Trouble

For every computer there comes a time when you have a problem with hardware or software. This is for those who want to learn the signs of possible fixes for having <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2Fs%3Fie%3DUTF8%26x%3D0%26ref_%3Dnb%5Fsb%5Fnoss%26y%3D0%26field-keywords%3DHard%2520Drive%26url%3Dsearch-alias%253Daps&tag=techlinkblogc-20&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative"target="_blank"rel="nofollow"title="hard drive" >hard drive problems. Although if you know you’re hard drive is dieing then you better back it up as quickly as possible. You will of course need to get the back up software to protect your data. If you have special drivers you will need to backup yours drivers. If you have an <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2Fs%3Fie%3DUTF8%26redirect%3Dtrue%26ref_%3Dsr%5Fnr%5Fi%5F2%26keywords%3DOEM%26qid%3D1267804632%26rh%3Di%253Asoftware%252Ck%253AOEM&tag=techlinkblogc-20&linkCode=ur2&camp=1"target="_blank"rel="nofollow"title="OEM" >OEM system then you will need to backup the Hidden Partition.

So what are the warning signs of a hard drive failure:

Unexpected freezing of <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2Fs%3Fie%3DUTF8%26x%3D0%26ref_%3Dnb%5Fsb%5Fnoss%26y%3D0%26field-keywords%3DWindows%26url%3Dsearch-alias%253Daps&tag=techlinkblogc-20&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=390957"target="_blank"rel="nofollow"title="Windows" >Windows — When Windows Locks up and you have to reboot or getting a Blue Screen of Death. You have no choice but to restart because you can’t do anything with windows.

Losing data files — if you seem to see files being lost or deleted without your direct input. It might be a sign of a computer virus or it could be a damaged hard drive.

Locking up during boot — this is most common when you have a hard drive failure, although if you can restart and not be a problem then just keep in mind that it might be the beginning. The more frequent you have the lockup boot problems the more chance of the hard drive dieing.

Hard drive isn’t recognized in BIOS– Although this can be a old hard drive, if the bios can’t see it then the problem might be a hard drive failure, usually this is meaning you just have to replace the hard drive. there’s isn’t much you can do with this problem, just replace the hard drive. Most of the time it is a problem inside the Hard drive bios and you really can’t fix this, you’d have to send it off to possibly save the hard drive data.

Clicking, Scratching, Whirling, Grinding sounds from Hard drive — This is the most dangerous signs of hard drive failure and means you need to get your data off ASAP. If you want to hear some of the waring sounds of a dieing hard drive click here.

Although some of these can or can not be a hard drive failure, some can be driver issure or disk defragmentation and should be check out to rule out these problems. There can be several problems that might be easily fixed. If you think it is a failure you might try Spinrite. The program is made by Steve Gibson and he actually has a “Absolute Satisfaction Guarantee“. So if it doesn’t work or your not satisfied you aren’t out any money. I’ve used this in the past for hard drives that are dieing so I could get all the important data off before it died all together. It is essential that if you can get it working for a short time to get a backup.

Disclaimer: Although spinrite might fix some of the problems associated with a hard drive failure, it might not fix all the problems or any problems. So it is left up to the user to decide if it is worth it or not to buy it. I don’t recommend this for every situation or every problem only for the off chance that it might let you get the important data off the computer before you lose it. Use at your own risk.

Signs of a Computer Infection!

So I was thinking this morning what I missed and I totally missed on how you might be able to tell if you have a computer virus. It does me no good to talk about a virus if you don’t know you’re infected. I was thinking of the times I had a client who had trouble but wasn’t what I thought.

So How do you know?

Some people would say it depends on factors but here are what I call clues that make me suspect a virus:

Slow or Sluggish computers – Here is what I know if the computer is really slowing down and have a dual core or quad core. If you are running a system and sees a lot of <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2Fs%3Fie%3DUTF8%26x%3D0%26ref_%3Dnb%5Fsb%5Fnoss%26y%3D0%26field-keywords%3DHard%2520Drive%26url%3Dsearch-alias%253Daps&tag=techlinkblogc-20&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative"target="_blank"rel="nofollow"title="hard drive" >hard drive activity even when the computer is idle then it might be a virus or it could be a program doing what it is supposed to be doing. So this is somewhat of an indication but not always.

Slow internet connection on the computer or on the network — Due to the fact that most people have a router that is connected to all the computers and if you internet connection on all your systems are slower than normal then you could have a virus. I use Speed Test website to help determine this.

Corrupt files or Missing files – Sometimes you have a text documents or files that are missing and you have to pay to get them back. It’s an old scheme and usually once your files have been encrypted you can’t get them unencrypted. So this is why I added this one also because it varies from virus to virus.

Programs don’t work like they used to – This is also a very common association with a virus because virus makers don’t have time to test it out on a variety. Most of the time if you get a call that a program is no longer working tat would be the first thing I’d look at, if not check to see what other programs have been installed lately.

In some cases more files are the Hard drive – This can be a indication of a virus because the virus might be using the system to host files or other such illegal activity. Although this is happening less and less it can still be a possibility and should be checked out. I like to use a graphical tree size program to determine if that is the truth.

Pop ups or Browser redirects — this is a common thing along the way. It’s always the same and saying something like “you have a virus” or “You unprotected and you might have a virus”. The theme here is to scare the user into buying there product that does not do anything. It sometimes even looks like a real <a href="http://www.tech-linkblog.com?wp_ct=76"target="_blank"rel="nofollow"title="Anti-Virus" >anti-virus program or spyware program but in truth it is just a scam. In some cases it will send you to a site because it keeps wanting you to buy the product.

DNS Changes on you — Some hackers like to have you go through there server so they can watch everything you do online. They are wanting to get the sensitive information of bank account, and other important accounts. This is really the ones that need to get off your system asap.

These are the signs I’ve seen in the past that would indicate a virus but as with any problem. You will need to check for all the possibilities. It is always going to be an issue with people because most people don’t know about the signs, now you do and you can now be a better computer user. It is you who can only fight viruses by knowing all the possible system and only you can defeat a virus. In the next article I will talk about the tools to help you find and defeat a virus. This will be a big blog post because I have so much to teach and explain. If you like these post by all means leave a comment and help spread the word.

Cricket Wireless Broadband Card — How to get better speed!

After buying the card last month, I did a quick review about the broadband card. I wanted to talk about the speed problems that I had when I first used the modem. Here is how to possibly getting better speeds when you use your card. First off, you will need to disconnect from the internet and go to your quicklink mobile application:

You will click on “Tools” and then hit ‘Activation’. If you have it fail on your the first time you should reboot your system then try to do the activation after reboot that should fix the activation problem.
As you can see after I did the activation of the modem, my speed went way up from the last review. I thought I should talk about how you could possibly fix this. I called tech support over this to get a better speed.

This is where I learned about the activation. If you move or go to another City or travel to far, you will need to tell the modem that there is a new tower closer to you. It seemed to of really boosted my performance when I go to places on the internet. So if you come up with some cool tips or tricks to help others by all means leave a comment. After this problem is fixed and the speed seems to be coming more and more, I’d like to recommend everyone who reads this article to go buy the A600. It is really a fast little modem and more reliable to boot. My other review was incomplete because of the speed problems I had but now it is fixed and I am really happy!!!

Install this update to resolve a set of known application compatibility issues with Windows Server 2008. After you install this item, you may have to restart your computer.

This was not a critical update and it seems to resolve so many issues with compatibility. One thing it seemed to fix on my system has been the shutdown time. It is now quite fast, it would normally take me 2 to 3 mins to shutdown, now it does it in less than a Minute. So if you’ve not installed this update please install it soon. I would like to know if people are seeing the same thing I am. I’ve found a great resource on fixing it if you are still having problem, it talks about how to check your system performance. Although this is been doing it lately with these programs not loaded or even running, they still seem to cause problems so now I get the feeling it has to do with legacy programs. This should fix most of the problem with older programs.
